Unique phenomenon of mass flowering and fruiting of Melocanna baccifera and sporadic to mass flowering of Dendrocalamus hamiltonii was recorded after 48-50 years and 18-20 years, respectively during 2004-2008 in Mizoram and Meghalaya. Nine rodent species were collected and identified from bamboo flowering areas of Mizoram and Meghalaya.
The biochemical analysis showed that protein contents were higher in bamboo fruit (10.50g/100g) and seed (13.125g/100g) and crude fiber was remarkably higher in bamboo fruit (9.623g/100g) in comparison to rice and maize. Lysine content was highest in bamboo seed (886.69mg/gN) as compared to rice (230.0mg/gN) and maize (200.0mg/gN).
Studies indicated that bamboo flowering did not have any effect in the upsurge of rodents.
Use of zinc phosphide followed by bromadiolone in bamboo bait stations proved effective in controlling rodents and saving the poison bait from weathering.
