The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre was established in 1975 along with its head quarter with the mandates to create research base in the state and to help in solving the problems relating to agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fishery and agroforestry in the state of Manipur. The Centre is located at Lamphelpat, Imphal with 24.049'N latitude, 93.055'E longitude and altitude of 780 m above MSL. Since its inception, the Centre has been actively involved in research and extension activities, aimed at fulfilling the critical gaps in technologies and developing new technologies specific to farming conditions of the state. |
The Centre has five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) viz. KVK Imphal West, KVK Chandel, KVK Churachandpur, KVK Tamenglong and KVK Ukhrul. Through extensive research and field experiment, the Centre has till date released 22 crop varieties which include 11 Rice varieties, 2 Maize varieties, 2 Perilla varieties, 1 Brinjal variety, 5 Tomato varieties and 1 Jatropha variety respectively. The Centre played a major role in formulation of State Policy Documents and Strategies for Agriculture Development in Manipur which include drafting of Doubling of Farmers’ Income by 2022: Strategy Document for Manipur; State Action Plan on Double Cropping For Sustainable Agri- Horticultural Development in Manipur in 2020-21 and 2021-22; Action Plan for Enhancement of Rice Production in the state; Three Years Governance Action Plan (2021-22 to 2023-24) for Livestock Production & Feed Policy and Action Plan for Animal and Fishery Development. Quality seed production & processing, tissue culture on local banana, IOT Based Automated Hydroponic System, mushroom production, etc are some of the major activities undertaken in the Centre. Till date, 83 entrepreneurs were enrolled in Agri Business Incubation (ABI) Unit of the ICAR Manipur Centre and had been tirelessly serving the farmers and agri-preneurs of both the valley and hill areas of the state.

SERVICES PROVIDED BY ICARNEH, MANIPUR CENTRE
- ICAR-NEH Quality Analysis Laboratory The laboratory is a state-of-the art research cum testing facility in Manipur and Northeast India. It is equipped with more than 50 advanced analytical instruments. The laboratory has four major sections: Analytical wet lab, Spectroscopy lab, Molecular biology lab and Microbiology lab. Besides, the facility has a separate sterilisation room, storeroom, and designated washing area. The laboratory is equipped with a two-tier power back system and adequate safety measures. The laboratory has been primarily established for quality analysis of fresh and processed horticultural products. In addition, cereals, pulses, oilseeds, milk, meat, and fish products can also be tested for limited quality parameters. Farmers can test their samples at a subsidised rate. The laboratory also provides an opportunity for hands-on training for the students, researchers, academicians, food analysts and extension functionaries on a payment basis.
- Gramin Krishi Mausam Seva: Agromet Advisory Services Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa was started by the Ministry of Earth Sciences in 2015 to provide crop-specific advice to farmers twice a week at district level/print / visual / radio / IT such as Short Message Service (SMS) and Integrated Voice Response System (for widespread). The India Meteorological Department has implemented Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa in collaboration with ICAR-Research Complex for Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat for Manipur State. It issues crop and location-specific weather-based agricultural advisories for the benefit of the farming community. Activities under Gramin Krishi Mausam Seva (GKMS) at Agrometeorological Field Unit (AMFU)-Lamphelpat, ICAR Manipur Centre includes the recording and maintaining the database of daily weather data (Rainfall, temperatures, relative humidity, Wind speed, wind direction, bright sunshine hours, soil temperatures and evaporation recording done at AMFU-Lamphelpat and only rainfall data maintained at KVK Chandel, KVK Churachandpur, KVK Ukhrul and KVK Tamenglong). Sharing of recoded data with IMD, RMC-Guwahati, press and media for public awareness. Databases are also shared for research purposes. Agromet Advisory Services (AAS) Bulletins in English and Manipuri (Roman script) are prepared based on the observed past weather, forecast weather, real-time growth stages of crops, insect pest infestation, etc., as advised by AAS Advisory Committee members of the Centre for 16 districts and 4 blocks of Imphal West. Feedback from farmers is collected on the service provided to them to improve the quality of the service. Extreme weather reports are collected through cloud sourcing and from farmers' fields through WhatsApp. Validation of forecast weather is also done and submit reports to IMD and RMC-Guwahati. Time to time trainings of farmers are done on using weather-forecasting services for better crop cultivation and prevention of pests and diseases.
