Realizing the need for a sound research support for the improvement of livelihood security in the state through improvement in farm productivity, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi had set up a research complex at Tadong, Gangtok (altitude 1300 m amsl) on 11th October 1976 as one of the Regional Centre of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Shillong. Subsequently a Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) was established at Ranipool and Saramsa (East District, Sikkim) in 1982. The research complex at Tadong is a representative location of sub-tropical and mid hills of Sikkim and act as technology generation centre while its KVK serves as technology transfer wing. The research complex has 19.96 ha land; of which 8.50 ha is under experimental crops and 2.50 ha under forests. The KVK has 6.16 ha land. The research complex has office-cum laboratory building, PCR Laboratory, library, ARIS cell, video conferencing facility, seminar hall, committee room, residential quarters, guest house, farm complex, farm store and animal sheds.

Thrust Areas:

Sikkim was declared as Organic State in 2003. In the light of above, the thrust areas of research are modified as follows:

  • Suitable integrated farming system incorporating tree, crop and animal components for optimum productivity and sustainability.
  • Restoration of degraded land through suitable agro-forestry models and production of quality planting material of indigenous MPTS.
  • Genetic improvement of local cultivars of major cereals (maize, rice), native pulses (urd, rice bean, rajma), oilseeds (rapeseed-Mustard) through breeding techniques.
  • Exploitation of biotechnological tools for crop improvement/ production of quality planting materials, IPR protection and disease diagnosis
  • Nutrient management in economically important crops through organic sources.
  • Establishing production facilities for organic inputs such as vermicompost, farm compost, biogas slurry, etc and demonstration to farmers.
  • Production of quality planting material of major horticultural crops such as Sikkim mandarin, ginger etc.
  • Standardization of organic package of practices for Sikkim mandarin, chillies and ginger.
  • DNA Fingerprinting and chemo profiling of native cultivars of ginger and chilli.
  • Standardization of package of practices for round the year cultivation of high value vegetable crops like tomato, capsicum, broccoli etc.
  • Standardization of cultivation package for temperate fruits like peach, strawberry and kiwi fruit.
  • Eco-friendly/organic management of insect pest and diseases of rice, maize, chillies, Sikkim mandarin ginger and large cardamom.
  • Cattle development- efforts are concentrated on livestock production, through artificial insemination using good quality frozen semen.
  • Poultry development- Introduction of high yielding layers and fast growing broilers, promotion of backyard poultry.
  • Pig development– introduction of fast growing breeds of pigs.
  • Goat development- genetic improvement for litter size through selective breeding
  • Livestock feeding- Introduction of good quality feed and fodders, utilization and preservation of available feed and fodders through silage or hay.
  • Animal health management– intensified surveillance to prevent the entry of infectious and contagious diseases in the State and providing better diagnostic services using bio-technical tools.
