The Division of System Research and Engineering (DSRE) was created during March, 2021 by merging six disciplines viz. Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, Agro-forestry, Horticulture, Soil Science and Water Management. The disciplines of DSRE have made outstanding contributions for development of hill agriculture in the North Eastern Hill regions of India. The major research focus of this division is to develop sustainable hill agriculture through basic/applied research in the fields of natural resource management, organic farming, horticulture and mechanization. The Division is collaborating with the natural resource management, horticulture and agricultural engineering scientists of six regional centers of the institute located in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura who are coordinating with the respective state governments.

The division is also continuously providing technical help and other consultancy services to all the stakeholders of the region. Keeping pace with International developments made in the subject as well as looking into regional (NER) priorities, significant contributions have been made through a number of research projects undertaken in different areas of natural resource management including soil and water, acid soil amelioration, conservation agriculture, Jhum improvement, integrated farming systems, organic farming, packages of practices for agriculture and horticulture crops, agroforestry, improvement and development of horticulture crops, collection, evaluation, conservation and utilization of genetic resources of important horticultural crops, post-harvest management, value addition, farm mechanization, geospatial tools development, contaminated soil management, soil testing and fertilizers recommendation, compost and vermicompost, climate resilient technologies, etc.

Major Research Achievements

Developed the Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) practices for different crops viz. low land rice, maize, ginger, turmeric, groundnut, soybean, mustard, potato, etc. under acidic soils of northeast India.
A cost-effective furrow lime application method (300-400 kg per hectare) was standardized to address the soil acidity problem and to sustain the crop yield in acidic soils of northeast India.
Soil Test Crop Response (STCR) based equations were developed for the integrated fertilizer recommendation for varying soil test values (N, P &K) for rice and maize
Developed a low-cost Rapid Soil Health Testing (RSHT) kit for the on-farm soil testing (pH, organic carbon, N, P & K) in acid soils of northeast India
Protocol for the preparation of enriched compost (PSN) using locally abundant weed biomass, nutrient sources (Urea, rock phosphate and elemental sulphur) and organic manure was developed to reduce the dependency on the costly inorganic fertilizers in northeast India
Spatial variability map of soil organic carbon (SOC) inventories for surface soils was developed across six states of NER (viz., Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura covering geographical area of 15.61 Mha using Geographical Information System (GIS) environment
Seed priming and seed pelleting technologies for maize and pulses (Frenchbean and Pea) were developed for improving crop productivity and nutrient efficiency in acid soils
Identified the paper mill sludge (lime sludge) as the alternative to agricultural lime for the acid soil remediation and for the sustainable crop yield improvement in acid soils of northeast India
SOC stocks and soil CO2 efflux under various land uses, crops and cropping systems were estimated under acidic soils of Meghalaya
Maize and Frenchbean intercropping with recommended NPK+FYM (5t/ha) along with 500kg furrow lime application for the acid soils of Meghalaya
Identified the poultry manure as the substitute for agricultural lime based on ash alkalinity and calcium carbonate equivalent for the acid soil reclamation and crop yield improvement in acid soils of northeast India
A software on Soil Fertility Assessment and Recommendation (SFAR) was developed covering 12 important soil parameters such as soil acidity, carbon, macro-and micronutrients for acid soils of the NE region to assess the status of soil health and plant nutrient recommendation for 10 important crops of northeast region
Established a new critical limit of Zn in acid soils of NE Region (1.02 ppm by Mehlich-3)
Developed a spectra-based predictive model for plant tissue P and N estimation in acid soils of northeast India
Developed a spectra-based yield prediction model under frost induced injury in standing crops estimation in acid soils of northeast India
Different IFS models have been developed for various land use situations and slope
Organic production technologies of 33 crops (cereals, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables etc.) were standardized under cropping system mode and a book published.
An IOFS model have been developed to meet the diverse requirement of the farm household.
Demonstrations on IOFS in cluster approach in several villages is being undertaken under NPOF with active support from Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) covering a total area of 110 ha comprising of 345 farmers.
No-till cultivation of pea, lentil and rapeseed in rice fallow and French been in maize fallow has been standardized.
Developed permanent raised and sunken bed land configuration for enhancing cropping intensity and crop diversity in marshy land situation.
Developed 5 no’s of intensive integrated farming system (IIFS) – for effective recycling of available resources, increasing the farm productivity and profitability of marginal land holding (1-1.2 ha).
Multipurpose trees (06 species) and fruit trees (06 species) based cropping system models were developed for the land having more than 50 % slope to achieve high productivity, profitability and soil quality improvement.
Developed innovative bore hole method of Pinus kesiya resin tapping technology and standardized the resin extraction time for obtaining high resin yield.
Developed multi-storied agro-forestry based cropping systems for higher production and productivity.
Jhum improvement techniques were demonstrated for the conservation of soil and water resources under the hilly ecosystems.
Empirical models were developed to find out the carbon sequestration potential of Pine (Pinus kesiya) trees
Establishment of medicinal plant garden - Collection, documentation and live preservation of important medicinal plants of North Eastern Himalayan region of India
Exploration, collection, evaluation, conservation, and utilization of fruit crops: Citrus species (89 species / varieties/ genotypes), Peach (8 varieties / genotypes), pear (3 varieties / genotypes), plum (8 varieties), Guava (10 varieties), avocado (2 varieties), kiwifruit (04 varieties) dragon fruit (01 genotype), sohiong (05 genotypes), soh snam (01), and sohshang (05 genotypes) were collected and conserved in the field gene bank, Horticulture Farm.
Characterization of lemon genotypes (Assam lemon, Jaintia lemon, and Elaichi lemon.) on the basis of morpho-physiological traits.
Developed a DRIS Standards for identifying yield limiting nutrients in Khasi Mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco)
Standardized a technology for quality planting material production in Khasi mandarin (C. reticulata Blanco)
Psidium guineense (Swartz.) was found to be the most diverse of the cultivated species, and all the red flesh genotypes were close to each other through molecular characterization (using 56 microsatellite markers) of the 18 accessions.
Identification of guava germplasm suitable for meadow orchards under mid-hill conditions: RCGH-7 was found superior under meadow orchard with respect to fruit yield (12.0 kg/plant), fruit weight (148.60 g), and higher economic returns.
Techniques to extend the harvesting time of guava: Sprays of ethephon (900 ppm) delayed the harvesting period by 27 days, reduced fruit fly infestation and improved the yield and quality of fruits.

Developed Megha Taro-1 and Megha Taro -2 varieties for Meghalaya
Developed RCMT-10/ Megha Tomato-3 (IC- 597243) and Megha Tomato-2 (IC- 597242) varieties
Brinjal: RC Manikhamen-1 / RCMB-10 (2012/BRBW RES-5): A high yielding (340.89 q/ha) bacterial wilt (PDI: 9.14%) tolerant cultivar of brinjal evaluated under AICRP on vegetable crops and released by SVRC, Manipur in 2021.
Megha Supreme (RCGH-1): A guava hybrid developed from the cross between Sour Type × Red Fleshed.
Megha Magenta (RCGH-4): It is a hybrid between Red Fleshed × Allahabad Safeda, followed by single plant selection in F1 generation and further through clonal multiplication.
Megha Wonder (RCGH-7): A guava hybrid developed through hybridization and selection between Lucknow-49 x Pear Shaped guava.
Megha Seedless (RCG-11): Variety developed through selection. Fruits are less seeded (< 50/100g pulp). Medium size fruit (110-135 g), yellowish white in colour at maturity, pulp white, high sweet taste, very few seed.
INGR-22085 (ADM/VV-1/AZMC-1): An orange flesh accession of cucumber, rich in carotenoid content (54.8 µg/g in mature fruits; 8.12 µg/g in tender fruits). Registered (July, 2022) with NBPGR, New Delhi.
Deciphering the disparity in rainfall trends and patterns among different regions of India using 158 years of open-source time series rainfall datasets.
Development of the methodology for comparing the climate change perceptions and meteorological observations of shifting cultivators to improve the understanding of adaptation decisions.
Identification of the changes in daily maximum temperature extremes across India and their relation to cereal crop productivity.
Development of the methodology for assessing the usability of the weather forecast for tackling climatic variability and its effect on the Maize crop in the Northeastern Hill Region of India.
Developed awareness about climate variability and changes among the farmers through popularization and real-time dissemination of weather-based agro-advisories, Farmers’ Awareness Programmes, Climate Smart Village, water harvesting and efficient utilization, etc.
Generation of anthropometrical data base for women of Meghalaya involving in agricultural activities has also been accomplished.
Agro processing centre for value addition and post-harvest technology dissemination have been established during 2011 for processing of the locally available agro-produce.
Near real time weather forecast based agro-advisory is being provided to the farmers twice in a week through different media including SMS since 1996.
