To commemorate the world environment day on 5th June, 2024, ICAR KVK, Ri-Bhoi celebrated World Environment day at Umsaitphrah village of Ri-Bhoi District alongwith Officials from FXB, an NGO, Umktieh with 25 farmers and farm women . The programme started with welcome address by Headman, Mr.Pailan Kurbah followed by Plantation of Tree saplings by the farmers and officials on the site selected for Orchard development which was previously a wasteland. Dr. Meghna Sarma, SMS, Agronomy spoke on the theme of World Environment day,2024 which is under the “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience” and stressed on the slogan Our Land Our future. She further explained them various ways which are urgently required to safeguard our ecosystems. Dr. Moloy S.Baruah, SMS, Animal Science stressed on taking up of activities which will help in protecting the environment and requested that more and more farmers should adopt technologies which are directly connected to the changing climatic conditions. Altogether 1000 tree saplings of Khasi Mandarin, Assam lemon and citrus jambhiri were distributed to the farmers today as a part of Environmental day celebration for development of Orchard and subsequently 2000 seedlings of the same will be distributed for orchard development in Mawthei, Umeit, Nonglakhiat and Lumshyiap Village .The programme ended with vote of thanks from Mr. Probinus Suting from FXB, an NGO, Umktieh Village.
