On November 6, 2024, ICAR-KVK, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, organized a training cum input distributionprogramme in Marapara village under Dalu Block of West Garo Hills under the NICRA project. The villages like Marapara, Bagugre, Sananggre, Rimrangpara and Noranggrefaces significant climate challenges that limit rice productivity.With the current rice harvest ending by the end of November, it is essential to maintain crop production through winter vegetable cultivation. Farmers were encouraged to grow winter vegetables such as Cabbage, Cauliflower, Radish, Coriander, Tomato, Chilli, Knol-khol, Onion, French Bean, Dolichos Bean, Brussel Sprouts, Turnip, Carrot etc. Led by Dr. Tarun Kumar Das (CTO), the program was attended by 42 farmers and were provided with seeds and poly mulch to support sustainable winter vegetable cultivation. Poly mulch was introduced as a method to maximize the efficiency of limited resources. Dr. Das highlighted the importance of winter vegetables in sustaining livelihoods during lean period and explained how poly mulch could enhance growth by retaining soil moisture and controlling weed growth. The program, aims to improve farmers' resilience and income opportunities, helping them adapt to climate challenges and secure sustainable livelihoods.
