Three days “Awareness cum Training programme on Natural Farming”

        Three days “Awareness cum Training Programme on Natural Farming” was organized at Division of System Research and Engineering (DSRE), ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya during 17th-19th September, 2024 under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP). A total of 30 participants from Mynsain village, Pynthor, Umpowin, and Khlieh Umtrew of Ri-Bhoi district participated in the training. The programme started with the welcome address by Dr. Christy B.K. Sangma, Sr. Scientist, DSRE, and Dr. Badapmain Makdoh, Sr. Scientist, DSRE, highlighted on the principles and practices of natural farming and its scope for North Eastern Hill region. During these three days programme, different educational lectures and power point presentations were given: Overview of natural farming, and options of bio resources in hill agriculture under natural farming was taken by Dr. CBK Sangma, Sr. Scientist (Soil Science), DSRE; IFS for natural farming and organic farm management by Dr. B. Makdoh, Sr. Scientist (Agronomy), DSRE. Soil health management in natural farming perspective was given by Dr. L. Joymati Chanu, Scientist (Soil Science), DSRE; Local breeds of cattle available for natural farming in Northeast and other states of India was taken by Dr. Rahul Katyar, Scientist, Animal Reproduction and Gynaecology; Potential crops in Natural farming was covered by Dr. Krishnappa R., Sr. Scientist, Crop Physiology; and Biopesticides in natural farming was taken by Dr. K. Kuotsu (Entomology). Besides all these, lectures, hands on demonstration on the bio-formulation preparation for natural farming and its application in soil and crops were carried out by D. Nongtdu and B. Blah of DSRE. Farmers were exposed with the field visit related to natural farming and visited dairy unit where they were shown different breeds of cattle and explained which type of cattle should be used for natural farming. They were also taken to the Natural Farming field of this institute, IFS models, and Organic farming unit of ICAR NEH, Umiam and RRTC, Umran. Scientists and farmers interaction was a major part of the programme, where the queries of the farmers were answered by the scientists. Sincere gratitude goes to the Director of the Institute, Dr. V.
