Dated 30th Spetember, 2024: ICARRC NEHR Umiam organized field day on “Rice Improvement for Low Temperature Tolerance” at Upper Shillong experimental farm for breeding low temperature tolerance rice. The porgramme was coordinated by Dr. Amit Kumar, Sr. Scientist (Plant Breeding), Dr. Letngam Touthang, Sr. Scientist (Plant Breeding), Dr. Philanim Scientist (Plant Breeding) and Dr. Simardeep Kaur, Scientist (Plant Biochemistry). There programme was attended by 52 participants comprising of scientists with multidisplinary and farmers. At the out set, Dr. Tasvinah Borah, Sr. Scientist (Plant Pathology) welcome all the participants, Dr. Amit Kumar highlighted the research activities being carried out at upper Shillong with special reference to low temperature tolerance rice. Dr. VK Mishra, Director of the institute enlightened the scientists and farmers presence with encouraging message and stress on the importance of breeding tolerance rice variety for low temperature involving multidisciplinary team. It was followed by field visit with extensive interactions, discussion and varietal performance selection at early reproductive stage. During the field visit, Dr. Amit Kumar has demonstrated the various advance breeding lines with promising performance for tolerance to low temperature cum high yield potential. Director of the institute was delighted to witness the progress of breeding activities and performance of various promising lines which can be released to the farmers in near future. The programme was ended with word of thanks by Dr. Uttam Singh, Sr. Scientist (Agril. Statistic).
