A field day-cum demonstration programme entitled “Dissemination of suitable agroforestry technologies for improving and
climate adaptation of tribal farming community of Meghalaya” was organized on 2nd August, 2024 at Umktieh Nongshilliang village, Ri-Bhoi District. This programme was conducted
under Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP), ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya with the aim to sensitize the farmers about the role and importance of agroforestry technologies
in maintaining the ecological balance and challenging the negative impacts of present scenario of global climate change. During this programme, 600 numbers of high value tree seedlings
including Tree bean (Parkia rorburghii), Titachopa (Michelia champaca), Poma (Chukrasia tubularis), Gamhari (Gmelina arborea) and other tree seedlings were distributed to 10 numbers of
beneficiaries comprising of 8 female and 2 male.
This programme was coordinated by Dr. N. Raju Singh, Dr. M. Prabha Devi, Dr. Y. Bijen Kumar and Mr. Praveen G. In this programme farmers
were demonstrated the soil sampling techniques, tree planting techniques/tree management practices and highlighted the scope for inclusion of different agricultural crops under agroforestry
systems as a sustainable land-use strategy for addressing the multifaceted challenges of agriculture, climate change, biodiversity conservation, and livelihood security in Meghalaya. The whole
program was facilitated by Dr. S Hazarika, Head, DSRE & Nodal Officer, TSP, ICAR- NEHR, Umiam.
