On March 14, 2024, the Meghalaya State Fisheries Research and Training Institute, Mawpun,
organized an enlightening exposure visit for thirty-eight farmers to the Fisheries Farm of the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region in Umiam, Meghalaya.
The primary objective of this visit was to educate farmers on various aspects of scientific fish farming techniques and enhance their understanding of modern aquaculture practices.
During the visit, the farmers were introduced to several key concepts and practices crucial of successful fish farming.
They received comprehensive training on pond management techniques, including liming and manuring, which play vital roles in maintaining water quality and supporting
optimal fish growth. The farmers also learned about the preparation of cost-effective fish feeds using locally available ingredients and their application methods.
Another significant aspect covered was the selection of high-quality fish seeds and their stocking methods. The farmers were also introduced to composite culture,
a scientific technique involving the cultivation of multiple fish species with different feeding habits in the same pond to maximize overall fish productivity.
Additionally, they received valuable insights into fish health management, including disease prevention and treatment.
One of the major challenges faced by hill aquaculture is the prolonged cold climates, which suppress fish growth
and immunity. To address this issue, the farmers were showed polyhouse-like structures over their fish ponds which help in maintaining the water temperature at
levels conducive to fish culture. Furthermore, the farmers received hands-on training on testing water pH and calculating lime doses according to the pH levels.
They also learned how to assess plankton availability in the water. In addition, the farmers were exposed to ornamental fish breeding techniques. There was a particular
emphasis on encouraging unemployed youth and women to explore lucrative entrepreneurship opportunities through ornamental fish farming. Overall, the exposure visit was
highly interactive, providing the farmers with valuable knowledge and skills that can significantly enhance their fish production levels and improve their livelihoods.
The coordination of the visit was overseen by Mr. S. Gojendro Singh, Scientist SS (FRM), Mr. P. Mahanta, TO, Mr. Pynhun J. Ryntathiang, Technical Assistant, Dr. C. Debnath,
Sr. Scientist (FRM), Mr. Alakesh Das, STO, and Mr. Tasso Taynung, Scientist SS (AQ).
