Demonstration and Popularization of Scientific Fish Farming at Marngar Village

The demonstration and popularization program of scientific fish farming, organized by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya, at Marngar village on 5th December 2024, aimed to empower local farmers with knowledge and resources for sustainable aquaculture practices. Led by experts from the Division of Technology Assessment and Capacity Building, the program facilitated the distribution of fingerlings and provided valuable insights into the integration of fish farming into existing agricultural systems.
A total of 500 fingerlings of Rohu, Gania, and Guchi breeds were distributed among five farmers from the Marngar cluster. Shri. Gojendro Singh, Scientist from the Division of Animal and Fisheries Science, delivered informative sessions highlighting the significance of fish farming and its potential to augment farm income while improving water management practices.
The program emphasized the importance of scientific approaches in fish farming, including proper pond management, feeding techniques, disease prevention, and water quality maintenance. Participants were encouraged to adopt best practices to ensure the overall well-being and productivity of their fishery ponds.
The demonstration and popularization program of scientific fish farming yielded positive outcomes, with participating farmers gaining essential knowledge and resources for sustainable aquaculture practices. By distributing fingerlings and providing expert guidance, the program facilitated the establishment of fish farming as a viable alternative livelihood option for the local community.
Furthermore, the program contributed to the enhancement of water management practices, thereby promoting environmental sustainability in the region. The active involvement of scientists and researchers from ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region ensured the effective coordination and implementation of the program, fostering meaningful engagement between experts and farmers.
Overall, the program served as a valuable platform for promoting scientific fish farming practices and empowering farmers with the tools and knowledge required for successful implementation. It is anticipated that the adoption of scientific approaches in fish farming will contribute to the socio-economic development of the Marngar village and facilitate the doubling of farmers' income in the long run.
The program was coordinated by Dr. N. Uttam Singh (Senior Scientist & PI), Shri. Gojendro Singh (Scientist, DAFS), Dr. Aniruddha Roy (Senior Scientist, DTAC), Dr. Pampi Paul (Scientist and Co-PI), Dr. Tasvina R Borah (Senior Scientist and Co-PI), Dr. Rahul Katiyar (Scientist and Co-P.I), Mr. Gojendro Singh (Scientist, DAFS), Ms. Lutmonhaki Dkhar (SRF, FFP), and Mr. Wanbiang Dkhar (Project Assistant).
