On September 20, 2024, the ICAR Research Complex for the North-Eastern Hill Region (NEH), Umiam, Meghalaya, organized an awareness cum demonstration programme on jalkund in Mawsaitkhnam village, East Khasi District, Meghalaya. This program was conducted under the Farmers’ FIRST programme and it aims to educate participants on the construction and utilization of jalkund. The program was conducted by the Division of Technology Assessment and Capacity Building of the ICAR Research Complex. Its primary objective was to deliver a clear and accessible message regarding jalkund, encompassing all essential phases of its construction. This included site selection, necessary materials, and step-by-step construction processes, as well as crucial insights into the effective utilization of harvested water. Moreover, attendees received comprehensive information on the types of crops and vegetables that can be cultivated using the water collected in jalkund. The program was significant as it marked the introduction of jalkund water harvesting to the village for the very first time, a concept that had been previously unknown. This initiative sensitized participants to the basic principles and benefits of jalkund, laying the foundation for sustainable water management in their community. An interactive session was also incorporated into the programme to engage participants in discussions about the selection criteria for the next five beneficiaries of jalkund, as well as the distribution of rabi vegetable seeds/seedlings. The programme was coordinated by a Dr. N. Uttam Singh (Senior Scientist and Principal Investigator); Dr. Balusamy Arumugam (Scientist, Environmental Science); M. Bishonath Singh (Senior Research Fellow) and Wanbiang Dkhar (Project Assistant). Through this organized approach, the programme successfully fostered awareness and provided knowledge about jalkund, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
