Fisheries, being a vital component of the Integrated Farming System (IFS), play a crucial role in enhancing livelihood of farm household and ensuring sustainable income for farmers. The promotion of fisheries-based IFS is a key focus of KVK West Garo Hills, aimed at fostering sustainable growth and development within the farming community. By integrating fisheries into the existing farming systems, farmers are able to diversify their sources of income, enhance productivity, and improve overall farm resilience. With this goal in mind, the experts from ICAR-KVK, West Garo Hills— Dr. Monica Suresh Singh (SS cum Head, Agricultural Extension), Dr. Tarun K. Das (SMS, Agricultural Extension), and Ms. Priyanka Saha (SMS, Agronomy)—organized a program on August 21, 2024, at Marapara. The event featured a demonstration and distribution of 95 kg of fish fingerlings to local farmers. A total of 25 farmers, along with KVK staff, participated in the event. The distributed fingerlings included varieties such as Rohu, Katla, Mrigel, and Silver Carp. The promotion of fisheries is very important to create a balanced approach to agricultural development that aligns with both economic and environmental goals. The technologies shared with the farmers have generated significant interest, and their feedback will be invaluable in helping KVK introduce new technologies in the future.
